Google SGE AI Search Goes Global: Now in 120+ Countries*

Google’s revolutionary Search Generative Experience (SGE)

Embarking on a global journey, Google’s revolutionary Search Generative Experience (SGE)  is spreading its wings across 120 countries and territories, transcending its initial launches in key markets like the U.S., India, and Japan. This AI-driven conversational search experience, designed to furnish users with comprehensive, sentence-based responses instead of the traditional list of links, is set to redefine the search landscape.

The expansion of SGE comes with an expanded linguistic embrace, now accommodating four additional languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Indonesian, joining the ranks of English, Hindi, and Japanese. Google is committed to enhancing the user experience, introducing features such as the ability to pose follow-up questions, seamless language translations, and on-the-fly definitions.

Unveiled earlier this year as Google’s countermeasure to Bing Chat, SGE allows users to engage in natural language interactions with AI. Departing from the conventional search result format, SGE delivers responses in coherent sentences, complete with proper references. Recent upgrades to SGE include AI-generated summaries for locked articles, refined coding-related responses, and the capacity to produce images and drafts. Notably, access to SGE is extended to U.S. teens aged 13-17.

In its pursuit of continuous improvement, Google is trialing a feature that enables users to pose follow-up questions directly on the search results page. This advancement not only simplifies deep dives into topics but also ensures the sustained relevance of Google’s advertising business amidst the AI-dominated search landscape. This feature is slated for an initial release in the U.S. in English in the upcoming weeks.

The translation facet of SGE is also receiving a facelift. Users can now interact with words that possess multiple meanings when translating a phrase, allowing them to select the most contextually relevant meaning. Initially, this will be available to U.S. users for English-to-Spanish translations, with a broader rollout to other countries in the pipeline.

Furthermore, the definitions feature in SGE, which enables users to seek explanations for unfamiliar words within AI-powered overviews, is expanding its horizons. Initially spanning subjects like science, economics, and history, this feature now encompasses coding and health information. Users will notice highlighted words, providing a convenient hover-over preview of definitions. This enhancement is set to debut in English in the U.S., with global implementation following suit in the next month.

Expressing enthusiasm about the global expansion of SGE, Hema Budaraju, Google’s Senior Director of Product Management for Search, conveyed the company’s eagerness for continued innovation and expansion into more countries in the future.
