Having originated almost a decade ago, Proton initially gained recognition for its secure email alternative, Proton Mail. Over time, the company diversified its offerings, encompassing VPNs, a password manager, calendar, and now, an extensive cloud storage solution.
Proton Drive made its inaugural appearance on the web last September, followed by native mobile apps in December, and a Windows iteration in July. With this latest Mac integration, Proton Drive has achieved full cross-platform status, empowering users to effortlessly synchronize their data across all their devices.
Positioned as a cornerstone in Proton’s overarching mission to deliver secure, privacy-centric alternatives to Google products, Proton Drive emerges as a robust competitor to Apple’s iCloud, particularly for Mac users. The defining feature lies in its unwavering commitment to default end-to-end encryption for files and folders, covering even metadata and file names—a facet necessitating manual activation on iCloud.
The no-cost version of provides users with 1GB of storage, while premium plans commence at $4 per month, delivering 200GB of storage and a suite of additional features. Among these features, a standout is the ability to automatically archive previous versions of files for up to a decade.
Presently, Proton Drive for Mac exclusively syncs files stored within the Proton Drive folder to the cloud. However, Proton assures users that endeavors are underway to facilitate synchronization for any local folder, elevating the platform’s adaptability.
Despite Proton’s track record of open-sourcing most of its applications to instill transparency and fortify user security, the Mac version of the Proton Drive app remains proprietary. Nonetheless, the company asserts its commitment to unveiling the source code in due course. For Linux enthusiasts, compatibility is on Proton’s long-term roadmap.
