In a recent announcement, Instagram’s Head, Adam Mosseri, shared exciting news for users worldwide. The popular social media platform now permits everyone to download public Reels directly to their devices, expanding beyond the previous limitation of saving Reels only within the Instagram app.

Mosseri, speaking on his Instagram broadcast channel, highlighted that downloaded Reels will feature an Instagram watermark, showcasing the account name—similar to the watermark seen on TikTok videos.

To save a Reel, users can simply tap the share button and choose the download option. Notably, account owners have the flexibility to disable the download feature for their Reels. This can be configured through Settings > Privacy > Reels and Remix, where users can toggle the “Allow people to download your Reels” option.

It’s essential to be aware that if a downloaded Reel includes a licensed audio clip, the saved video will be without any audio. Only Reels containing original audio tracks will retain sound in the downloaded clip.

This expanded feature follows the initial introduction of Reels download functionality for U.S.-based users in June. Now, Instagram users around the globe can take advantage of this convenient option.

It’s worth noting that in 2021, Instagram ceased recommending clips with a TikTok watermark, aligning with the evolving dynamics of the social media landscape. Additionally, in August 2022, YouTube adopted a watermark strategy for downloaded Shorts, their short video product, as a measure to discourage cross-platform sharing.
