Threads Expands Its Reach to European Users After Five Months

Threads is now accessible to residents of the European Union

After a five-month wait since its initial launch in July, Meta’s social network Threads is now accessible to residents of the European Union.

Mark Zuckerberg shared the news on Threads, stating that Meta is extending Threads to more European countries. “Today, we’re welcoming more countries in Europe to Threads. Hello, everyone! 👋,” he announced.

The Threads.net website introduces a “Use without a profile” mode, eliminating the need for users to log in through Instagram. While this mode allows users to view posts, functionalities such as replying, liking, or reposting are not available. When using Threads in the EU without a profile, users will encounter a single algorithmically populated feed. Account search is possible, but post search functionality seems to be absent.

During the initial launch in July, Meta limited access to the social network in the EU to comply with various bloc regulations. Users faced restrictions on downloading the app and were unable to access the social network via a web version or URLs.

In response to attempts by EU-based users using VPNs to access Threads, Meta implemented “additional” measures shortly after the social network’s launch.

The official EU launch aligns with The Wall Street Journal’s report from last month, hinting at Meta’s plans to introduce Threads in the region in December. A countdown timer on Threads’ homepage last week pointed to a December 14 launch in the EU.

Mark Zuckerberg revealed during Meta’s Q3 earnings call that Threads had fewer than 100 million monthly active users. The EU launch is expected to contribute to surpassing this milestone.

In a recent announcement, Zuckerberg mentioned that Threads is experimenting with ActivityPub integration. This development allows posts from the Meta-owned social network to potentially appear on compatible decentralized networks like Mastodon.
