Activision Blizzard has reached a settlement to pay approximately $50 million, resolving a 2021 lawsuit filed by California’s Civil Rights Department (CRD). The lawsuit, stemming from a two-year investigation, accused the video game giant of discriminating against its female employees. The settlement addresses various claims, with the CRD agreeing to withdraw accusations of systemic sexual harassment. Instead, the focus shifts to allegations of gender discrimination, emphasizing the denial of promotions and unequal pay for substantially similar work. Activision Blizzard has committed to implementing measures to ensure fair pay and promotion practices.

As part of the agreement, Activision will provide monetary relief to women who were employed or worked as contractors in California between October 12, 2015, and December 31, 2020. The settlement is pending court approval.

Company Response and Acknowledgment

In response to the settlement, Activision Blizzard emphasized that the CRD explicitly acknowledged that no court or independent investigation substantiated claims of systemic or widespread sexual harassment within the company. The video game maker also asserted that investigations found no wrongdoing by its board or chief executive in handling instances of workplace misconduct.

It’s worth noting that in 2021, prior to the settlement with the CRD, Activision Blizzard had agreed to pay up to $18 million to settle similar claims brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion in October 2021 adds significant context to the developments.
