BT, the leading telecoms group in Britain, is set to repurpose its traditional street cabinets into electric vehicle (EV) charging units, potentially adding 60,000 new charging points across the nation.

The inaugural installation, scheduled for an East Lothian cabinet in Scotland, is the kickoff of a series of trials in various regions of Britain over the upcoming months.

Research reveals that the scarcity of charging infrastructure on UK roads is dissuading potential EV buyers, with 38% stating they would have chosen an EV if charging accessibility were better.

Presently, the UK hosts 53,906 EV charging points, with plans by the government to reach 300,000 by the 2030s.

Tom Guy, the managing director of BT’s start-up arm Etc, stressed the importance of their innovative charging solution, aimed at making EV charging more accessible. He highlighted collaborative efforts with local councils, aligning with BT’s mission to ‘connect for good.’

BT confirmed their plan to retrofit cabinets to include a charge point alongside existing broadband services, without requiring additional power connections. This initiative could potentially utilize cabinets serving current copper broadband services or those earmarked for retirement, contingent on available space and power.
