Mayo Clinic and Cerebras Systems Join Forces for Healthcare AI Advancements
Mayo Clinic, a non-profit medical center based in Rochester, Minnesota, has unveiled a strategic collaboration with Silicon Valley startup Cerebras Systems to propel artificial intelligence (AI) models within the healthcare industry.
In this innovative partnership, Mayo Clinic, boasting major campuses in the U.S. and additional locations in the U.K. and the United Arab Emirates, will harness the computing chips and systems provided by Cerebras. Their collective goal is to tap into decades of anonymized medical records and data to develop tailored AI models for diverse healthcare applications.
AI Capabilities and Applications
Dr. Matthew Callstrom, Mayo’s Medical Director for Strategy and Chair of the Radiology Department, underscored the multifaceted capabilities of the AI models. Some will specialize in processing and summarizing extensive medical records for new patients using text comprehension. Others will scrutinize medical images for patterns that may elude human experts or analyze complex genome data. Importantly, the AI systems will not replace medical decision-making, which will remain the responsibility of healthcare professionals.
Dr. Callstrom emphasized the augmentation role of AI in healthcare decision-making, stating, “How do you make the right decision for each patient? You have to weigh all those factors, you have to have a lot of experience. That’s where AI comes in to start to augment that.”
Mayo Clinic envisions sharing the outcomes of this collaboration on its Mayo Clinic Platform, a data network utilized by healthcare systems globally, including Mercy in the U.S., University Health Network in Canada, and systems in Brazil and Israel.
While Mayo Clinic has yet to determine the pricing for the AI technology, it aims to make the results of this initiative accessible through its collaborative data platform. The announcement was made during a presentation at the JPMorgan Chase health care conference in San Francisco.
Cerebras Systems, recognized as one of several AI chip startups challenging market leader Nvidia, will contribute both hardware and software development services to Mayo Clinic under this multi-million-dollar agreement spanning several years, according to Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman.
