Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has recently completed testing for a fleet of drones set to revolutionize the decommissioning efforts at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. In a landmark move, TEPCO plans to deploy a snake-shaped robot and four drones in February for a comprehensive survey, almost 13 years after the plant’s devastating meltdown.

This upcoming mission marks a significant milestone in the plant’s history. While previous robotic efforts focused on the submerged interior of the reactor’s containment vessel, the deployment of drones represents an innovative approach. TEPCO anticipates that these aerial devices will provide a holistic, above-water perspective of the damage, offering valuable insights not achieved before.

The primary objective of this drone mission is to capture pivotal images that will play a crucial role in evaluating strategies for the removal of melted fuel debris. TEPCO is optimistic about the potential insights this technological approach could offer, enhancing their comprehension of the intricate challenges associated with decommissioning.

Unit 1, the reactor that succumbed to meltdown following a devastating tsunami in March 2011, remains the most severely damaged among the four reactors operational that fateful day. TEPCO continues its relentless efforts to fathom the extent of the damage and devise effective plans for the extraction of molten fuel—a complex process anticipated to unfold over the course of several decades.

In anticipation of the imminent drone mission, a TEPCO spokesperson underscored an unwavering commitment to a safety-first approach. Rigorous checks of procedures and instructions will be meticulously carried out to ensure safety at every juncture of the investigation. This emphasis on safety underscores the intricacies and inherent risks in addressing the aftermath of one of the most disastrous nuclear events in history.
