OpenAI insists its practices align with EU privacy laws, emphasizing efforts to minimize personal data in system training. The company expressed a commitment to collaborating with Garante constructively. Microsoft-backed has been given a 30-day deadline by Garante to present its defense arguments.

 

The investigation will consider insights from a European task force comprising national privacy watchdogs. Italy, as the first West European country to restrict ChatGPT, reflects the growing scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators on the AI tool’s rapid development.

 

The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), implemented in 2018, empowers authorities to impose fines of up to 4% of a company’s global turnover for rule violations. In December, EU lawmakers and governments took a step closer to regulating AI systems like ChatGPT, reaching provisional terms to govern this rapidly advancing technology.
