On Wednesday, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, announced the resignation of Zhang Nan, also known as Kelly, as the CEO of Douyin Group, the sister app of the popular short video platform in China. Zhang Nan is set to take on a new role within ByteDance, focusing on the video editing app Jianying.
A New Chapter: Zhang Nan Move to Jianying
Zhang confirmed her departure via a post on her personal WeChat account, expressing her decision to step down from the Douyin Group CEO position. ByteDance has verified this move.
In her upcoming role at Jianying, Zhang Nan aims to contribute to the growth of the video editing app in the era of artificial intelligence. However, she did not disclose the specific position she would be taking within the Jianying unit.
Jianying serves as the Chinese counterpart to CapCut, a widely used editing app. In September, research firm Data.ai reported that CapCut became the second ByteDance app to surpass $100 million in total consumer spending, boasting over 490 million users.
Zhang, a ten-year veteran at ByteDance, played a pivotal role in the company’s leadership, contributing significantly to the growth of Douyin into China’s leading short video platform and one of the most prominent apps in the country. She reported directly to ByteDance’s CEO, Liang Rubo, during her tenure as the head of Douyin Group.
In addition to her responsibilities with the Douyin app, Zhang Nan, recognized by Forbes as one of the world’s most powerful women in 2020, previously oversaw ByteDance’s flagship news aggregator app, Toutiao.
Before joining ByteDance, Zhang founded Tuba, a popular photo-sharing app, which was later acquired by ByteDance in 2014.
