Samsung Introduces Samsung Gauss, a Multi-Functional Generative AI

Samsung Gauss

a creation of Samsung Research, is a versatile suite comprising three distinct tools: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image. In a noteworthy move just days after OpenAI’s developer event, Samsung showcased its own generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, during the Samsung AI Forum 2023.

The Samsung Gauss Language, a robust language model akin to ChatGPT, demonstrates the capability to comprehend human language, answering questions and facilitating various productivity tasks. From composing and editing emails to summarizing documents and language translation, Samsung envisions integrating this language model into its devices, enhancing the intelligence of smartphones, laptops, and tablets. While the spokesperson did not confirm support for English and Korean as interaction languages, Samsung remains tight-lipped on this detail.

Meanwhile, Samsung Gauss Code, complementing its code assistant code.i, focuses squarely on development code. Tailored for developers, this AI model aims to expedite code writing, offering features such as code description and test case generation through an interactive interface.

The third component, Samsung Gauss Image, specializes in image generation and editing. An intriguing application includes the ability to transform low-resolution images into high-resolution counterparts.

Although currently restricted to internal use among Samsung staff, the company anticipates making Samsung Gauss available to the public “in the near future.” However, a specific timeline remains undisclosed. Rumors suggest that Samsung aims to incorporate the Generative AI model into the Galaxy S24, with a potential release as early as 2024.

Notably, Samsung has established an AI Red Team tasked with overseeing security and privacy concerns throughout the AI development process, aligning with principles of AI ethics.

Daehyun Kim, Executive Vice President of the Samsung Research Global AI Center, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting generative AI research in collaboration with industry and academia.

The name “Samsung Gauss” pays homage to the renowned mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, credited with the foundational theory (the normal distribution) underpinning AI and machine learning.

It’s worth highlighting that Samsung’s foray into generative AI follows a temporary ban on such tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, imposed seven months ago due to an internal data leak.
