App Defense Alliance (ADA)
In a strategic move to enhance app security measures, initiated by Google in 2019 to combat malicious Android apps within the Play app store, has joined the Joint Development Foundation (JDF), a Linux Foundation project specializing in supporting organizations engaged in technical specifications, standards, and related endeavors.
Originally focused on detecting Android malware, the App Defense (ADA) has evolved to encompass a broader scope, including malware mitigation, Mobile App Security Assessments (MASA), and Cloud App Security Assessments (CASA). While initially founded by mobile security firms like ESET, Lookout, and Zimperium, the ADA has progressively welcomed new members over the years, including Trend Micro and McAfee.
The recent development signifies the ADA’s transition to an independent foundation, a strategic decision aimed at attracting participation from other major tech companies. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and Microsoft have now joined the ADA’s steering committee, underscoring the shared objective of enhancing app security through collaborative implementation of industry standards, as stated in a joint announcement.
Beyond its Android-specific origins, the ADA acknowledges the universality of security best practices across all platforms, justifying its move to a more neutral home within the Joint Development Foundation.

Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation, commented on the move, stating, “The App Defense Alliance’s shift to the Joint Development Foundation reflects our commitment to open collaboration and innovation in the realm of app security. By uniting technology leaders and fostering an open ecosystem of cross-platform requirements, we aim to unlock new dimensions of performance and security for the benefit of our community.”
