In response to heightened competition in China, Apple (AAPL.O) is implementing rare discounts on its iPhone lineup, with retail prices seeing a reduction of up to 500 yuan ($70). The U.S. tech giant is rolling out a 5% price cut, clearly reflected on its Chinese website, as part of a time-limited Lunar New Year promotion spanning from January 18 to January 21 in anticipation of the upcoming mid-February festivities.

Sales of Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series have encountered significant headwinds in the Chinese market, falling notably short of the benchmarks set by its predecessors. Notable rivals such as Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) and Xiaomi (1810.HK) are offering compelling alternatives. In tandem, reports indicate that select companies and governmental bodies are imposing restrictions on the usage of Apple devices among their staff, echoing similar actions taken by the U.S. government on Chinese apps due to security concerns.

Jefferies analysts reported a substantial 30% drop in Chinese iPhone sales during the initial week of 2024 compared to the corresponding period in the prior year. The sales slump continued, resulting in a 3% decline throughout 2023. Industry pundits foresee an even more fiercely competitive landscape in the upcoming year.

Interestingly, Apple, known for maintaining pricing stability, has opted not to increase prices for the iPhone 15 series since its launch in September. Online retail platforms like Pinduoduo have responded by offering discounts of up to 16% on both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro since the start of the year.

Nicole Peng, senior vice president at market research firm Canalys, remarked that Apple’s decision to implement discounts aligns with the global sales pressure faced by the company, especially in the demanding Chinese market where competition is intense, and consumers display a growing reluctance to upgrade their devices.

Peng emphasized Huawei’s resurgence, indicating that some Chinese consumers may opt for Huawei driven by patriotic sentiments. Canalys projects Apple’s global sales to remain stagnant this year, with a slight downturn expected in the Chinese market.

Despite inquiries regarding its pricing strategy and market dynamics, Apple has refrained from providing comments on the matter.
