Canon Cutting-Edge Lithography Machines Exceed Expectations, Targeting Growth in Chipmaking Industry

On Tuesday, Canon announced that the early interest in its newly introduced lithography chipmaking machines has exceeded expectations. The company is strategically striving to narrow the gap with the Dutch company ASML, currently Europe most valuable tech company. ASML’s extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, utilized by industry giants like TSMC and Intel, employ beams of light to craft advanced circuitry.

Canon recent unveiling of nanoimprint lithography machines, which directly imprint circuit patterns onto wafers, has generated industry discussions due to its highlighted features of low cost and low power consumption. While the contribution of these machines to Canon’s sales remains uncertain at this early stage, Minoru Asada, head of Canon’s finance and accounting headquarters, noted a more significant response than anticipated.

The company is strategically planning to initially deploy these machines for the production of memory chips, with subsequent expansion into other areas. Asada mentioned that aims to sell 247 of its existing lithography machines in the financial year ending December, a notable increase from the previous year’s 187 units. This surge in demand is attributed to the growing need for power chips and graphics processing units (GPU), especially for artificial intelligence applications.
