Didi Global, a prominent ride-hailing service in China, issued a formal apology to its vast user base on Wednesday, responding to a recent glitch in its app. As a goodwill gesture, the company decided to offer coupons worth 10 yuan ($1.40) to the millions of users affected by the disruption.

The glitch, which occurred on Monday evening and persisted into Tuesday, led to users across several cities being unable to book rides. This technical hiccup inconvenienced Didi’s extensive user base of 587 million worldwide, with the majority located in China.

In response to the disruption, Didi promptly announced that it would settle accounts for all affected orders within 24 hours. Additionally, users who experienced overcharging during this period were assured of a refund for the excess amount. The company, expressing regret and compensation, went on to provide a 10 yuan ride-hailing discount coupon to all users.

Despite Didi’s efforts to address the situation, the 10 yuan discount offer generated mixed reactions on Chinese social media platforms. Some users reported difficulties in claiming the coupon, while others criticized the limited usability of the coupon, valid only until December 2.

Didi clarified that the disruption was a result of an underlying system software failure, categorically ruling out a cyberattack. The company reassured users that its services were fully restored and committed to implementing upgrades to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite the apology and compensation efforts, Didi opted not to disclose the exact number of users eligible for the coupon. The company’s China service, according to its latest results, recorded an average of 31.3 million daily transactions in the third quarter.

As users await resolution and evaluate the impact of the glitch, Didi faces the challenge of managing user expectations and maintaining trust in its services.
