Empowering AI: ChatGPT Enables Personal ‘GPTs,’ Wearable AI Trends

A significant shift akin to Apple’s pivotal move with the iPhone’s app store is now underway in the realm of AI. OpenAI, a year after introducing ChatGPT, announced a groundbreaking step at its recent developers conference. They’ve unveiled plans for a platform where anyone can fashion custom versions of their natural language chatbot, termed “GPTs,” and offer them via an online store.

“GPTs are specialized iterations of ChatGPT tailored for specific purposes,” explained OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during the DevDay conference. In a live demonstration, he showcased how the technology could create an advice-giving application for startups using videos of his speeches as input. Altman emphasized the potential for these personalized GPTs to interact with various other specialized versions, enabling intricate tasks to be accomplished seamlessly.

Experts foresee this move as a catalyst propelling conversational AI technology, akin to what the iPhone did for mobile apps. CNET’s Stephen Shankland pointed out that these purpose-driven GPTs hold promise in expanding the practical utility of AI, providing targeted tools that cater to specific needs. Additionally, the ability to fine-tune these tools, leveraging distinct data sets or visual styles, could elevate AI capabilities beyond the current broad functionalities of ChatGPT.

To facilitate the distribution of these tailored chatbots, OpenAI plans to launch the GPT Store soon. The company intends to share revenue with creators and eventually offer subscription models for individual GPTs. While details on pricing tiers for creators and OpenAI’s commission remain undisclosed, parallels have been drawn to Apple’s 30% fee on app sales, raising questions about potential fee structures for GPTs.

Curiously, a directory named “All GPTs” has emerged, showcasing over 200 custom GPTs. Developer John Rush created this directory, prompting an overwhelming response with 3,000 GPT submissions in just 24 hours. However, Rush noted that a significant portion of these submissions were fake, underscoring the swift and enthusiastic response within the developer community.
