Google Maps Unveils Personalized Control Features in Latest Update

Google Maps is rolling out an array of updates designed to put users firmly in charge of their personal information

In a fresh development, . The navigation app is set to debut functionalities that facilitate the seamless deletion of specific place-related activity and streamline access to location controls directly from the app’s distinctive blue dot.

Users can soon expect the ability to effortlessly review and erase recent activity tied to specific places, covering searches, directions, visits, and shares. For example, if you’ve recently used the app to navigate to a bakery, the upcoming update will enable you to effortlessly manage and delete all associated activity linked to that specific location.

Additionally, the recognizable blue dot on Google Maps, indicating your current location, will serve a dual function as a gateway to location controls. A simple click on the blue dot will provide users with insights into the status of their Location History and Timeline settings, indicating whether Maps has access to the device’s location.

These forthcoming updates are poised to be available on both Android and iOS platforms in the coming weeks, with Google assuring users that notifications will be sent when these features are accessible on their accounts.

In a move aimed at enhancing user control, Google Maps also reveals that, for users opting to activate Location History, their Timeline data will be saved directly on their devices. Marlo McGriff, Director of Product at Google Maps, affirms users’ ultimate control over their information. Users can delete any or all parts of their information at any time or disable the setting entirely. To address concerns about device changes or losses, the option to back up data to the cloud is available, featuring automatic encryption for heightened security.

A notable adjustment is the default setting for auto-delete controls when enabling Location History, reduced to three months from the prior 18 months. Google ensures users that these changes will be gradually implemented over the next year on both Android and iOS platforms, with users receiving notifications when the updates are available on their accounts.
