Humane, a Silicon Valley startup spearheaded by former Apple luminaries, unveiled its latest innovation on Thursday: the Ai Pin. Priced at $699, this device is a pioneering blend of cutting-edge AI technology and wearable convenience.
Wearable AI Assistant by Design
Designed to be affixed to clothing, the Ai Pin acts as a conduit to a virtual assistant powered by the tech prowess of OpenAI, the minds behind ChatGPT, and the formidable cloud computing capabilities of Microsoft (MSFT.O). Its sleek design incorporates a laser projection system that displays text and monochromatic images directly to the user.
While numerous tech players in Silicon Valley are chasing the next wave of consumer devices—particularly mixed-reality headsets—Humane is taking a distinct path. Imran Chaudhri, the co-founder and President, emphasized during an earlier demonstration that their focus diverges from devices mounted on the face, asserting, “the future is not on your face.”
Instead, HumaneAi Pin redefines interaction by forgoing a traditional screen and relying extensively on artificial intelligence for user engagement. The Pin’s virtual assistant excels by crafting messages in the user’s unique tone and offers a “Catch Me Up” feature, summarizing cluttered email inboxes. Moreover, the device incorporates a camera capable of capturing images and employing computer vision to analyze objects, including estimating their nutritional content—particularly useful for scanning food items.
Imran Chaudhri articulated, “Ai Pin is the embodiment of our vision to seamlessly integrate AI into everyday life, enhancing our capabilities without eclipsing our humanity.”
Scheduled for release in the United States on Nov. 16, Humane has garnered a substantial $241 million in funding from investors like Microsoft, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, and other notable backers.
