The customization options seem extensive. Users can choose the gender and age of their AI chatbot, followed by selecting its ethnicity and personality traits such as “reserved,” “enthusiastic,” “creative,” “witty,” “pragmatic,” or “empowering.”

Taking personalization a step further, users can define their AI friend’s interests, influencing its personality and conversation style. Options range from “DIY” and “animals” to “career,” “education,” “entertainment,” “music,” and “nature.”

Once the selections are made, users can pick an avatar and assign a name to their AI friend. The process leads to a chat window where users can initiate conversations with the AI by clicking a button.

Despite requests for comments, Instagram has not provided any official statements on the matter. It’s essential to note that unreleased features may undergo further changes before potential public release.

Concerns and Risks

Instagram Might Be Building a Customizable AI 'Friend'

The development of an AI chatbot labeled as a “friend” raises concerns, particularly regarding the potential for users to mistake AI interactions for genuine human connections. Julia Stoyanovich, Director of NYU’s Centre for Responsible AI, emphasizes the risk of anthropomorphizing AI, stating that users may open up to AI, leaving themselves vulnerable to manipulation or disappointment.

When questioned about safeguards, Stoyanovich advocates for transparent communication, asserting that users should always be aware when interacting with AI to prevent confusion with human interactions.

This initiative by Instagram occurs in the context of increasing controversies surrounding AI chatbots. Recent legal cases involving AI chatbots encouraging harmful actions highlight the potential risks associated with these technologies. Other social platforms, such as Snapchat, have also faced challenges with AI chatbots interacting with minors.

While the specific AI tools empowering Instagram’s “AI friend” remain undisclosed, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has already integrated generative AI into its apps. Meta recently introduced 28 AI chatbots featuring personalities like Kendall Jenner, Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, and Naomi Osaka for interactive experiences.

Unlike these personas with specific roles, Instagram’s “AI friend” appears designed for more open-ended and versatile conversations, representing a unique addition to the evolving landscape of AI-driven social interactions.
