iPhone 15 Pro Unveils Revolutionary Spatial Video Recording Feature in iOS 17.2

iPhone leverages both its primary and ultrawide cameras during recording

In a groundbreaking move, Apple introduced the highly anticipated iOS 17.2 today, delivering an extraordinary feature exclusively for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users—spatial video recording. This cutting-edge capability allows users to capture moments in three dimensions, offering a unique and immersive experience when reliving memories on the upcoming mixed-reality headset, Apple Vision Pro.

To achieve this three-dimensional marvel, the iPhone leverages both its primary and ultrawide cameras during recording. The resulting spatial videos are seamlessly stored as a unified file in a dedicated album within the Photos app labeled “Spatial.” Furthermore, these captivating videos effortlessly synchronize across devices via iCloud. Notably, spatial videos boast a resolution of 1080p at 30 frames per second, ensuring a visually stunning and fluid playback.

Enabling spatial video recording is a breeze—users can navigate to the Camera section under Formats in Settings and toggle on “Spatial Video for ‌Apple Vision Pro‌.” Apple recommends holding the iPhone in a landscape orientation for optimal results during recording.

While spatial videos can be enjoyed on all iPhones and compatible devices, it’s essential to note that they will appear as conventional 2D videos to those without access to Apple Vision Pro.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, expressed the transformative nature of this feature, describing the recorded videos as “magical” and asserting that they set a “new bar for what’s possible.” Beyond the marketing buzz, this innovation positions the high-end iPhone as a distinct choice for users seeking a deeper connection with Apple’s forthcoming AR/VR headset, slated for launch next year.

Joswiak emphasized the exceptional camera systems embedded in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, highlighting the devices’ claim to the best video quality in any smartphone. With this spatial video recording feature, Apple is not only redefining possibilities but also enabling users to capture and relive special moments with unprecedented realism.

In tandem with the spatial video recording debut, iOS 17.2 brings additional enhancements, including the introduction of the Journal app, a revamped Apple TV app, and an innovative method for accessing Health app data through Siri. Apple continues to push the boundaries of innovation, creating a seamless and enriched user experience across its ecosystem.
