iPhone Action Button into a ChatGPT Voice Assistant—Siri Who?

Exciting news for iPhone users!

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice feature is now accessible to all free users, allowing you to elevate your voice assistant game on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Say goodbye to Siri dominance and embrace the potential of the new Action Button, replacing the age-old Mute button on these latest Apple smartphones. A revamped Settings menu lets you customize the Action Button for more than just muting your ringer.

Tailor the Action Button to suit your preferences—whether it’s launching the Camera, activating the Flashlight, recording a Voice Memo, accessing the Magnifier app, utilizing Accessibility features, or running an app Shortcut.

And here’s where it gets interesting. With the recent announcement making Voice access free for all ChatGPT users, you can now seamlessly configure the Action Button to launch ChatGPT’s Voice access feature. No more Siri restrictions, anyone can join in on the ChatGPT experience by associating this feature with their Action Button.

Here’s how to set it up: Head to the “Action Button” menu in the iOS Settings screen, select the “Shortcut” option, tap “Choose a Shortcut,” scroll to “ChatGPT,” and associate the Action Button with the “Start voice conversation” Shortcut. Make sure to have the Shortcuts app downloaded on your iPhone if you haven’t already.

Once configured, a press and hold on the Action Button kickstarts your ChatGPT voice session. With five diverse voices—Ember, Sky, Breeze, Juniper, and Cove—you can interact with ChatGPT by asking questions and receiving intelligent responses, making Siri seem a tad outdated.

While ChatGPT is a standout choice, the Action Button isn’t limited to just that. Explore other common tasks like ordering your favorite Starbucks coffee, starting a workout, identifying songs with Shazam, calling your go-to person, jotting down a quick note, and more.

Many third-party apps have embraced the Action Button shortcuts feature, spanning music, food, utilities, productivity, photography, workout, reading, meditation, entertainment, and AI utilities. Even Apple’s first-party apps are on board.

If none of the preset options fit your needs, you can create your custom Shortcuts in the Shortcuts app, adding a personal touch to the Action Button. But let’s be honest, adding ChatGPT support is a top-tier choice, given its versatility in handling everyday queries, surpassing Siri’s capabilities.

Now, if only we could set ChatGPT as the default assistant on the iPhone…
