Microsoft Enhances EU Cloud Data Processing and Storage
On Thursday, Microsoft revealed a phased roll-out plan to empower its EU cloud customers to process and store all personal data within the region. This strategic move, in line with evolving privacy and security legislation, mirrors a broader industry trend, with Amazon Web Services having announced a similar commitment in October.
While Microsoft had previously permitted the processing of some data within the EU cloud, this latest development extends the scope to encompass data present in system-generated logs, generated automatically during the utilization of Microsoft’s services.
As data storage for large companies becomes increasingly expansive and distributed across numerous countries, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations has become a challenging task. Amazon Web Services had already announced in October its commitment to allowing data storage exclusively on servers situated in the EU.
In the upcoming phase, Microsoft aims to address the storage of temporary data transfers crucial for technical support interactions, with a scheduled launch later this year. Julie Brill, Chief Privacy Officer at Microsoft, shared these developments in a blog post, highlighting the company’s additional plan to introduce a paid support option. This option ensures that the initial technical response originates from within the EU, offering an enhanced level of support for its cloud customers.
