Nvidia, a leading U.S. chipmaker, has launched the GeForce RTX 4090 D, a modified version of its advanced gaming chip, designed to comply with U.S. export controls targeting China. This move comes after the Biden Administration’s October announcement of export rules that led to the blocking of previously created AI chips (A800 and H800) and a top-tier gaming chip (RTX 4090) for the Chinese market.

The GeForce RTX 4090 D, heralded for its remarkable performance, efficiency, and AI-driven graphics, is slated to be available to Chinese customers starting in January. A Nvidia spokesperson emphasized the extensive engagement with the U.S. government during the product development process to ensure full compliance with export controls.

Nvidia’s previous dominance, holding over 90% of China’s $7 billion AI chip market, faces challenges due to the impact of U.S. restrictions. Analysts suggest that these constraints could create opportunities for domestic players like Huawei Technologies to make significant inroads.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Raimondo clarified on December 11 that Nvidia is allowed to sell AI chips to China, with the exception of those possessing the highest processing power. This nuanced approach aims to strike a balance between economic interests and national security considerations.

In a comparison with the banned RTX 4090, the China-focused RTX 4090 D is reported to be 5% slower in gaming and creative tasks. Priced at 12,999 yuan ($1,842), the China-focused RTX 4090 D is slightly more expensive, by 350 yuan ($50), than the second most advanced chip in the product series available to Chinese customers. This pricing strategy reflects Nvidia’s strategic positioning in the competitive Chinese market.
