Nio announced on Tuesday a strategic partnership with Changan Automobile to jointly develop battery-swapping electric vehicles. This collaboration aims to address cost challenges faced by the Chinese EV manufacturer, which has been grappling with losses. In addition to vehicle development, the partnership involves the construction and sharing of battery-swapping stations and the standardization of batteries, according to a statement provided to Reuters by Nio.

The move is part of Nio’s broader strategy to enhance profitability, involving workforce reductions and the postponement of long-term investments. These measures are in response to heightened competition, particularly triggered by Tesla’s price war earlier in the year. Nio intends to navigate this competitive landscape by improving efficiency and reducing costs.

Focusing on Battery Swapping Technology

Battery swapping, a process enabling quick replacement of depleted battery packs with fully charged ones, is a key focus of the collaboration. This method offers a potential solution to power grid strain during peak charging times. However, its widespread feasibility relies on the standardization of batteries, a point acknowledged by industry analysts and executives.

Nio, aiming to nearly double the number of battery-swapping stations in China this year, stands among a select group of EV manufacturers betting on this technology as a primary power option. Notably, Nio had 2,113 battery-swapping stations and almost 1 million charging poles in China by November 21.

While Nio and Changan are forging ahead with battery swapping, other EV manufacturers argue that such facilities are too costly. Instead, they prefer focusing on fast-charging technologies and extended-range hybrid models to address user concerns about range anxiety.

In terms of EV sales in the first nine months of the year, Changan and Nio secured the seventh and eighth positions in China, with 123,322 units and 109,993 units sold, respectively, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association. This collaboration reflects the evolving strategies of key players in the Chinese EV market as they seek innovative solutions to stay competitive and meet the growing demand for sustainable transportation.
