Strava Unveils Flyover: A 3D Aerial Video Recap for GPS Activities

Strava has launched a cutting-edge feature called Flyover

Strava  designed to provide users with a captivating 3D video map replay of their activities.

Powered by Fatmap, a 3D mapping platform acquired by Strava earlier this year, Flyover is exclusively available to premium Strava subscribers. To access this feature, users simply need to click on an individual GPS-powered activity and then hit the “flyover” button located at the bottom right of the screen. This functionality extends to all historical activities saved on a user’s profile.

It’s noteworthy that a previously available third-party app, Relive, offered a similar service by generating 3D animated videos using data from Strava or Garmin profiles. However, Strava discontinued support for Relive several years ago.

Strava initially teased the Flyover feature earlier this year and has been gradually rolling it out to Android users over the past few months. The official launch has now been announced, though iOS users will need to wait until early December for access. As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding the availability of the feature for web users.

Fatmap, founded a decade ago, originally focused on providing high-resolution digital maps to ski resorts. Over the years, it expanded its platform by incorporating additional data from satellite and aerospace companies, evolving into a comprehensive mapping tool for outdoor enthusiasts, often likened to a specialized Google Maps.

While Fatmap continues to exist as a standalone product, Strava has been seamlessly integrating the two platforms. This integration began with a single sign-on (SSO) functionality, enabling Strava users to log in to Fatmap using their existing credentials. More recently, Strava introduced static Fatmap maps to its activities. The introduction of 3D video flyovers represents the next phase in this ongoing integration process.
