xAI, is set to unveil its chatbot, Grok, to a select group of subscribers on November 4. The chatbot, known for its real-time information access and internet browsing capabilities, will be made available to all Premium Plus plan subscribers at $16 per month once it exits its early beta phase. Additionally, xAI is providing access to a limited number of users in the U.S. via a waitlist.

Grok, a conversational question-answering system, seems to leverage a knowledge base similar to the one used to train ChatGPT and similar text-generation systems. It possesses the ability to fetch up-to-date information from the web.

Despite limited information available about Grok and xAI’s broader research projects, xAI recently published a blog post shedding light on Grok’s development. The blog reveals that Grok-1, the driving language model behind Grok, was created over several months using a cluster of tens of thousands of GPUs, possibly supplied by Oracle. Training data was drawn from both the web (up to Q3 2023) and feedback from human assistants known as “AI tutors.”

According to xAI, Grok-1 exhibits remarkable performance on standard large language model benchmark tests, surpassing other models in its category. It is described as having “a bit of wit” and a penchant for answering “spicy questions” that other AI systems might shy away from.

Elon Musk’s vision for xAI is to develop an AI capable of understanding the true nature of the universe. The company, led by Musk and staffed by industry veterans from renowned organizations, has been advised by experts in AI safety and collaborates with companies like Tesla.

Grok-1’s capabilities may expand in the future, as xAI hints at equipping it with additional senses such as vision and audio to enable broader applications and real-time interactions.

Musk’s involvement in AI has evolved since his departure from OpenAI. His focus on developing AI aligned with his vision of “maximum-truth-seeking AI” has resulted in ventures like xAI, aimed at pushing the boundaries of AI technology.

In conclusion, xAI’s Grok chatbot is set to provide its subscribers, especially Premium Plus plan users, with early access to its cutting-edge conversational AI capabilities, marking another step in Elon Musk’s quest to advance AI technology.
