Xiaomi Disputes Huawei’s Claims on Patent Infringement
Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has strongly refuted recent claims made by a senior executive at Huawei, its rival. Yu Chengdong, who oversees consumer products and auto businesses at Huawei, criticized competitor firms for allegedly disregarding patents during a company event. While not directly naming Xiaomi, his remarks were widely interpreted as targeting Xiaomi’s “dragon bone” hinge technology, which was showcased with the launch of the Xiaomi MIX Fold 3.
Xiaomi’s Independent Development and Call for Rigorous Standards
In response, Xiaomi asserted that its hinge technology was developed independently and urged Yu to adhere to “basic scientific and rigorous standards” instead of unfairly criticizing competitors. Xiaomi emphasized that its patent included additional components not present in the patent referenced by Yu. Furthermore, They highlighted that the patent Yu mentioned was only made public in June 2021, months after Xiaomi had already disclosed information about its “dragon bone” technology.
Huawei’s Silence Amidst Growing Tensions
Huawei, the sixth-largest smartphone maker in China, has not responded to requests for comments. This dispute between Xiaomi and Huawei occurs against the backdrop of intense competition in China’s smartphone market, especially in the high-end segment. Notably, this is not the first time the two companies have clashed; a previous disagreement in 2018 revolved around the specifications of their smartphone cameras, with executives from both companies engaging in a public exchange of criticisms.
